Lessons are available at Sakura Studio on the Westcliff in Bournemouth and also online.

Adults of all levels are most welcome. Perhaps you are looking to re-visit your piano studies or might be seeking to develop and strengthen memory, improve technique and co-ordination.

  • I studied piano and Performing Arts with Gavin Bryars and John White and went on to further study with Sophia Rosoff, founder of the Abby Whiteside Foundation in New York. Sophia Rosoff greatly influenced my teaching style, developing a keenness to listen and strive for the overarching musical shape and rhythm and to always to “find the tune”.

I have taught piano at all levels for over thirty years and like to think my teaching style is intense but fun. Although classically trained I am happy to teach all musical styles placing emphasis on enjoyment and building confidence. For younger pupils I am keen to follow the ABRSM curriculum and am also happy to work with students who are seeking to widen their repertoire outside this format.

Alexander’s underlying key ideas are observed throughout lessons at all levels, following the process and learning ease and fluidity in playing the instrument.

  • A short note about the ABRSM curriculum. This can provide a valuable monitor to gauge classical musical development. The programme offers eight levels. At each grade three pieces are chosen from a broad range of musical styles. Essential aural training, sight reading skills and technical work are also included over the course of study.

Musical theory is also taught alongside practical piano studies from the outset. Covering the theoretical syllabus through the early practical grades I - V ensures a smooth transition to the more advanced grades VI - VIII.

  • On-line lessons are available via Zoom, FaceTime or Skype.

These lessons run in much the same way as classes at the studio.
